Mooting statement

OULS Mooting Statement

The OULS understands the important of being able to interract with other law students and in order to facilitate this, we hope to offer the opportunity to become involved in mooting.

Mooting is the presentation of fictitious legal cases in a mock courtroom setting. It provides participants with the opportunity to practice their advocacy skills and gain some insight into the realities of working in the legal profession.

'Mooters' typically work in pairs to produce their legal argument for or against a specific case. They are expected to analyse their question, conduct research to obtain supporting information and evidence and present their argument to the court.

Mooting offers the opportunity to gain or improve the following practical and personal skills:

  • Advocacy
  • Analysis
  • Legal interpretation
  • Presentation skills
  • Research
  • Confidence
  • Public speaking

Mooting can have a positive impact on progressing with a legal career.

It is the intention of the OULS to provide instruction and guidance in mooting skills to mooters organised into local/regional clusters. It is envisaged that this will make mooting more readily accessible to prospective participants. Guidance will be provided by the OULS mooting coordinator who will also bear overall responsibility for identifying mooting competitions and sourcing teams to represent the OULS in those competitions.

If you would like to become involved, please ensure that you are registered as a member of the Society so we can contact you with further details.
